When I lost my crochet mojo

I want to share my own experience of losing creativity and the desire to make patterns. When I first started this blog, I was very motivated. The ideas came by them self and I created many patterns that still gives me many visitors every day. It was fun. It was motivating. When I released my Sverre the lamb pattern, my husband checked google analytics and there were 120 people visiting my blog, at the same time! 120 people! That is a ton of traffic for a new blog! It was like this around the clock. This was my first pattern! I thought this was normal.

The next pattern didn’t receive so much attention as Sverre. I was also juggling 3 blogs, translating the patterns in German and Norwegian in addition to English. The ideas didn’t come as before and I was stressed and tired from the pressure I felt. I actually didn’t have pressure outside, nobody was forcing me to do anything. The stress was all in my head. I began to lose my inspiration and the desire to create new patterns. I lost my crochet mojo and I found it very stressing!

So, I took a step back. I started to follow other designer’s patterns and found great motivation on that. If you have lost your crochet mojo, your motivation and your desire to crocheting, here are some of the things you can do

How to get your crochet mojo back!

  • Take a break! Explore other hobbies! This can be rewarding and it will give you a sense of accomplishment that again will give you energy. If crocheting is your business, and you are in a position to take breaks, then finish your current orders and tell your customers that you need a little vacation. A few days can work wonder!
  • You could be just bored and this is why you lost your crochet mojo! Try stepping things up and learn something new. If you for example only make amigurumi, try crocheting something else for a change! Try making a cowl, hat or sweater, or learn something new, like Tunisian crochet. Also, if you haven’t knitted before, you can try that. There are many great classes online, and you can take one and learn something new! Annie’s offers many classes for everything from knitting, quilting to crochet! That’s the great thing about being crafty, there is always something to learn. There are also many free classes on Craftsy that you can check out! If that isn’t your thing you can browse YouTube for new techniques.

  • Go for a walk! Exercising allows our brains to take a break. When I do my fitness routine, I tend to forget about all the things around me and it gives me new energy!
  • Sometimes the problem isn’t even mental! To much crocheting can cause pain! If you have to take a break of crocheting because of wrist pain, I have collected some advice here.
  • Spent less time on social media. I know, this sounds strange. If I have lost my crojo and hang out too much on Instagram, I can end up feeling more pressure. I look at all the beautiful things the others are creating and I start to compare myself and feel pressure. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing all the things that other people make, but sometimes it can be sinful to put away our phones and spend some time in the real world.
  • My next tip is actually the opposite, some find new ideas and inspiration on social media. If you get inspired by looking at other people creations, go ahead and browse for new patterns and ideas!
  • Clean up and organize your craft room. That is if you have one! Sometimes we can get overwhelmed because of the chaos! Organize your yarn and sell or donate the things you don’t want. This can be motivating because you feel that you start fresh!
  • Visit the yarn store! This is my favorite advice. Seeing the beautiful colors and touching the soft yarn can give you new ideas and restore the desire to crochet.
  • Donate some of your finished projects! Give it to the homeless or somebody you know that appreciate homemade gifts! It can be rewarding to give something that people appreciate. You can also make a cute baby hat for newborns and donate to your local hospital.
  • If you are ready to try crocheting again, start with something small! Make something that is quick and easy, for example, my lamb from last year. A blanket or something bigger can overwhelming and suck the motivation right out of you again. Start small. With baby steps.
