Crochet bat – materials

I made two bats, one with sports weight yarn and one with worsted weight yarn. The smaller one is about 12 cm and the bigger is 15. I used a 2.5 mm crochet hook for the small one, and a 3.5 for the bigger one.

YouTube video for the crochet bat

This is a relatively easy pattern that you can work up in no time. The hardest part is the wing, but I also made a video tutorial on how to make the complete crochet bat! So if you are a beginner, you should try this pattern too!

Go and check out my channel and subscribe for weekly videos! I also have a German channel where I publish my German videos.

Materials

– Sports weight yarn in light and dark grey. You’ll need about 25 g in light grey and 10 g in dark grey. Small amounts of white. If you want a bigger bat, use worsted weight

– Crochet hook 2.5 mm (or fitting for the yarn).

-Filling materials.

– Scissors – 12 mm safety eyes

About the pattern

The bat is made in rows. Two separate pieces are being crocheted, then placed on each other and crocheted together.

The wings, feet and ears are made separately.

There is a separate part with pictures to help explain the different steps. The wings are crocheted in the back loop only (BLO).

Difficulty level: Intermediate. Finished size: 12 cm/5” inches tall (not including the ears and feet).

Body

Crochet in rows.

The bat is crocheted from bottom up. Make 2 panels. Chain 1 and turn after each row.

In light grey yarn.
Row 1: Ch 2, 1 sc in the first ch = 1 sc
Row 2: sc inc = 2 sc
Row 3: sc inc x 2 = 4 sc
Row 4: sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc = 6 sc

Row 5: sc inc, 4 sc, sc inc = 8 sc
Row 6: sc inc, 6 sc, sc inc = 10 sc

Row 7: sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc = 12 sc

Row 8- 12: 12 sc (5 rows).

Row 13: sc dec, 8 sc, sc dec = 10 sc

Row 14: sc dec, 6 sc, sc dec = 8 sc

Row 15: sc dec, 4 sc, sc dec = 6 sc

Row 16: sc inc, 4 sc, sc inc = 8 sc

Row 17: sc inc, 6 sc, sc inc = 10 sc

Row 18: sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc = 12 sc

Row 19: sc inc, 10 sc, sc inc = 14 sc

Row 20-24: 14 sc (5 rows)

Row 25: sc dec, 10 sc, sc dec = 12 sc

Row 26: sc dec, 8 sc, sc dec = 10 sc

Row 27: sc dec, 6 sc, sc dec = 8 sc

Row 28: sc dec, 4 sc, sc dec = 6 sc

Fasten off. Cut the yarn of the first panel, but not on the second one. Make the face on the second part.  Attach safety eyes between rows 22-23, 4 sc stitches part. (or whatever you like best). If you wish, make eyelashes or eyebrows with. If you want to make eyelashes, sew them on before attaching the back part of the safety eyes.

Use some white yarn and make teeth. Just sew one time a little under the corner of the mouth with white yarn.

Lay the panels on each other and single crochet them together. 1 sc for each row. Remember to add stuffing before closing. Stuff lightly, not too firm and do not stuff the neck.  Sl st in the first st and fasten off.

Ears

Worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker and move it up as you go. Make 2.

In dark grey yarn

Rnd 1: 4 sc in a mr =4 sc

Rnd 2: 4 sc

Rnd 3: (1 sc, sc inc) x 2 = 6 sc

Rnd 4: (1 sc, sc inc) x 3 = 9 sc

Rnd 5-7. 9 sc.

Rnd 10: (1 sc, sc dec) x 3 = 6 sc

Sl st in the first st and fasten off. Leave a long tail. Pinch the ear flat and sew back and forth a couple of times so it gets a little pointy.

Wings

Worked in rows. Make 2.

In dark grey yarn

Note, in every second row we don’t chain 1 as we turn. Just skip the first st (where the chain 1 is, and slip stitch into the next stitch). In the other rows we are chaining 1 and turning like normal. From row 2 and all the other rows, work in BLO only

Leave a tail at the beginning before making a slipknot. Use this strand for fastening later.

Row 1: Ch 15, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 13, turn (do not chain 1) = 14 sc Row 2: Work in BLO from here. Sl st in the next st. 12 sc, ch 1 turn = 12 sc

Row 3: 11 sc. Turn, do not chain 1 = 11 sc

Row 4: Sl st in the next st. 9 sc. Ch 1 turn = 9 sc

Row 5:  7 sc. Turn, do not chain 1 = 7 sc

(Leave 2 stitches unworked).

Work through both loops as normal.

Note: We are doing a picot stitch on the top of the double crochet stitch here. I recommend watching the video if you run into problems.

*Sl st into next st. In next st: [1 hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st in first of ch 2, hdc, sl st in the same st].  Sl in next st*.  Repeat *-* 1 more time. Sl st in last st fasten off.

Feet

The feet have a chain so you can hang up the bat upside down when its finished. There are 2 feet worked from a row of 3 single crochet.

In dark grey.

Row 1: Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from from the hook and in next 2.  Ch 1, turn= 3 sc

Row 2: Chain 6, sl st 5 times until the end of the chain. Sl st in the next 2 st. Chain 6, sl st 5 times. Sl st into the sc. Do not fasten off.

The chain for hanging the bat up:

Chain 8. Skip next sc, sl st in the last sc. Sl st on the side and finish off.

Cut the yarn and leave a long tail.

Assembly

Sew on the wings just above the neck. Sew them on a little slating like shown on the picture.

Sew on the ears on the top of the head with 4 sc space apart. Sew on the feet at the backside on the bottom so that the feet are facing down.
