Then keep reading, because I have a quick and fast project for you that will reduce your yarn stash in no time! Let’s face it, it can be so attempting to work with the new and pretty yarn that you just bought, leaving your scrap yarn in a draw or some box in your craft room. At least it is like that for me.
When we make something there are almost always some scarp yarn left! Usually I collect them in a little basked or a bag and move on to the next project, telling myself that I will get back to that mountain of leftovers after the next project. But I get easily distracted and then I forget about my stash, and move on to the next pattern. Sounds familiar?
I spoke to my mother the other day and she asked me if I could crochet her some dishcloths. She wants something thick so she wont burn her fingers and something durable.
What to do with all the leftovers?
You can also give some of your leftover yarn to the local kindergarten or charity! I have given a TON away for my son’s kindergarten but there where still some left, so I made some piratical dishcloth!
You can make your scrap yarn dishcloth from 4-5 of strands from your stash.
When one is gone simply attach another ball and crochet the strands in as you go. That saves time afterwards, because if you this, you don’t have to weave in so many ends. I hate weaving in ends and I guess that many of you do too. You can whip a dishcloth in no time and shrink the mountain of leftovers. If you take on a bigger projects like a blanket or so, you can maybe get rid of ALL the leftovers!
Would that be great! It’s like a fresh yarn-start!
The great think about this, is that it is simple and fast. If you are like me you want to get rid of all the leftover yarn fast and still make something pretty out if it.

Yarn scraps dishcloth
You’ll need
- A bigger crochet hook, 7 or 10 mm, depending how thick your yarn is
- Several balls of leftover yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviation used
- sl st – slip stitch
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
Shop related products
Grab 4-5 balls of yarn and make a slip knot
This is the method I prefer.
Make a circle with your yarn.
Grab the strand(s) to the left of your circle
And pull up a loop. Vollà, now yo have made a slip knot!
Make a chains. I made 15 chains, add more or less, depending how long your you want your project to be

To get a beautiful foundation row. flip your work and crochet into the “bumps” that I am pointing on.
Turn your work and crochet 1 sc in each stitch. I recommend putting your yarn in a basket or something.
When you get to the end of the row, chain 1, turn and work 1 sc in each stitch.

Keep repeating this until you have a square.
Then just single crochet around the complete dishcloth. I put 2 sc in each corner.
When you are done, make a chain of 12-13 or so, sl st in the first ch.
Look how thick my dishcloth turned out!

What a great idea! I would add that you should use 100% cotton yarn for potholders because acrylic or other man made fibers will melt if something very hot touches them. Cotton blended with other fibers is OK for dishcloths used to clean things.
